FROM STRESS TO SUCCESS: MANAGING EMPLOYEE WELLNESS
The mental well-being of employees is essential for
their productivity. This blog will explore how mental health influences work
performance. Factors such as job stress, long working hours, and a sense of
appreciation can significantly affect mental health. Elevated stress levels in
the workplace can be particularly harmful, as they may reduce job performance,
increase negative feelings, and reduce accuracy. Furthermore, excessive stress
can lead to exhaustion and adversely affect physical health (Dolcos &
Daley, 2020).
Overcoming Mental Health Stigma in the Workplace
Education and Awareness: Offer training for employees and managers on mental health topics, focusing on common conditions, their symptoms, and their impact on job performance. This training aims to enhance understanding and dispel myths
Promote Open Communication: Foster a culture where employees can discuss their mental health freely, without fear of discrimination or judgment. This can include regular check-ins, anonymous feedback options, or dedicated support groups
Implement Supportive Policies: Create and enforce policies that promote mental well-being, such as flexible work schedules, mental health days, and access to counseling services. Ensure these policies are clearly communicated and easily available to all staff (WHO., 2019., Mental Health in the Workplace)
Normalize Mental Health Conversations: Integrate discussions about mental health into regular team meetings or training sessions to make these conversations more common and reduce stigma over time (Harvard Business Review.,2020., We Need to Talk More About Mental Health at Work)
Provide Resources: Supply resources like employee assistance programs (EAPs), online mental health tools, and collaborations with mental health professionals to help employees seek support confidentially
Address Discrimination: Take prompt action against any discrimination or harassment related to mental health. Ensure employees are aware of their rights and the process for reporting issues
Evaluate and Adjust: Continuously evaluate the effectiveness of mental health initiatives through surveys, feedback sessions, or consultations with mental health experts. Use this input to make necessary adjustments and improvements (SHRM., 2021)
It is important to addressing mental
health for both employees and companies to maintain high work standards. There
are three main factors—work pressure, work duration, and employee
gratitude—affect mental health. High work pressure can lead to stress, extreme
fatigue, and depression if not managed properly, which harms mental well-being.
Additionally, employees who work long hours often struggle with mental health
issues due to an imbalance between work and personal life.
In conclusion, paying attention to
mental health is crucial for sustaining quality work. Managing work pressure
and ensuring a healthy work-life balance are essential for preventing mental
health problems and maintaining productivity.
